Open up a New Document and Select the Gradient Tool

Click on the Gradient Editor to Customize Your Colors

Click on the Left Gradient Stop and then on the Color Picker to Select Color-I chose Web Safe Color #ff0000

Then Select Right Gradient Stop and Select Color-I chose #330000

After Color Changes make sure that the Gradient is set to Linear and running Black to Red (select Reverse to switch order of colors

Using your Elliptical Marquee Tool Draw a Proportional Circle (Hold Down Shift Key while dragging)

Create New Layer, Draw an Ellipse, then Fill with White (ellipse should match shape of top of circle)

Add Layer Mask to White Ellipse Layer (Layer Mask Button is at bottom of Layer's Palette)

Select Gradient Tool and set colors to Black and White

Make sue that Layer Mask Thumbnail is selected and Draw a Gradient over White Ellipse. Make sure that you are using white in the top of the gradient and black in the bottom. White Reveals (or shows the layer image) Black Conceals (or hides the layer image) Gray or transition creates fade effect

Make a Duplicate Copy of this Layer, Flip it Vertically and adjust Gradient Mask ( I made the bottom highlight smaller to be more realistic) Group All Three Layers into Group(folder) and label Top

Make Duplicate of Group by choosing option in Drop-Down Menu and call this New Group "Bottom"

Merge the Three Layers in "Bottom" Drag this Group below "Top" group and Flip Vertically (You can hold down Shift while dragging to keep circle in line with top)

Add Layer Mask to Bottom Circle and use White to Black Gradient to create faded look (just as you did with highlights) You can also cut down Opacity a small amount to add to effect

Finally, add a Background Layer below the circles, Use a Radial Gradient of Red to Dark Red (the same colors used in the circles) to create a back lit environment
