Step 1:

Open a web document in Illustrator that is 1600 x 1200px. The image we will first create is a scalable vector graphic that could be applied to web or print. Create a leaf-like shape with the pen tool and fill with a Cyan color (#00FFFF).

Step 2:

With the Rotate Tool Selected from your toolbar, click and define a rotation point at the bottom point of your shape. Keep Rotation Tool active.

Step 3:

Now Hold down the Option(Alt) key and drag a copy of the leaf shape to the right. As you drag you should have a small box showing the degree of rotation next to the shape. Rotate it over about -10 degrees and realease.

Step 4:

Next, Hold down Command(Ctrl) + D until the shapes wrap all the way around to the first shape. Stop one short of the first shape, you will notice that the spacing is not perfectly equal between the last and the first. Select last shape and the Rotate Tool, and once again click bottom of shape and rotate over slightly to create more even separation.

Step 14:

Now you can start playing with Layer Blending modes on the Paper Layer to achieve multiple “grungy” effects. This one the mode is set to Overlay.
