Step 1:

Open New Web Document that is 1024 x 768px at 72 ppi. Place Ice Cube picture into New Document, Scale to appropriate size. Name New Layer “Ice”. (Original stock image has small stroke as border that needs to be deleted or brushed over)

______________________________________________________________

Step 2:

Open Woman’s Face picture in Photoshop. Use Magic Wand tool and select all the dark brown areas. This includes most of the hair and all facial features. With selection active, go under Edit > Define Brush Preset. Name the Brush “Face”.

______________________________________________________________

Step 3:

Go back to original document, select the Brush Tool. Create a New Layer above Ice and name it “Face”. Go under Brush Presets drop-down, at top left of control panel, and choose the Face Brush you created. Set pixel diameter to 400px. Then Open Brushes Palette (which can be found under the Window drop-down menu)and set the below options for Brush Tip Shape. The rotation is set to more accurately go with the ice block.

______________________________________________________________

Step 4:

Make sure Brush Opacity is set to 100%, and stamp the Brush 5 times in same location on Ice. This will amplify the depth of the face once we are finished. I used a black fill color, but that is not important. You will want to erase any hair that extends outside the ice.

______________________________________________________________

Step 5:

Make a copy of the Ice layer by selecting Layer and pressing Cmd(Ctrl) J. Drag new layer above “Face” layer. Now with “copy” layer selected, set a Clipping Mask by choosing the option from the drop-down menu at top right of Layer Palette.

______________________________________________________________

Step 6:

Now your face will be almost invisible, but the Layer Effects we will add are going to make it stand out. With Face Layer selected, double-click in area to the right of layer name to bring up Effects menu. Choose Inner Shadow from category list and set the options as they appear below. Opacity= 50%, Angle= 45, Distance= 1px, Choke= 7%, Size 8px. The color of the Shadow is #006699 and the Contour Quality is set to Half-Round.

______________________________________________________________

Step 7:

Next, Choose Satin from the list and use the below settings. Opacity= 47%, Angle= 19, Distance= 143px, Size= 95px. Contour set to Cone and same color is used as the Inner Shadow.

______________________________________________________________

Step 8:

Select the “Ice copy” layer and apply a Texturizer Filter. Texturizer is underneath Filter > Texture drop-down.

______________________________________________________________

Step 9:

Choose Sandstone for the texture and use the below settings.

______________________________________________________________

Step 10:

This effect should make the “indented” areas have more of a cut or chiseled look vs. smooth.

______________________________________________________________

Step 11:

Next add a Levels Adjustment Layer add the top of our layer stack. This will help set some contrast between light and dark. I used the below settings.

______________________________________________________________

Step 12:

Last Step is to use the Dodge and Burn Tools to touch up any areas that need to be darkened or lightened. Make sure you have the right layer selected when applying these brushes.
